Before the change, the course was taught in a traditional lecture format. The managers of these functions hold weekly meetings, which help reveal new obstacles that students may face and provide a better structure for dealing with those issues. It could collaborate with peer institutions to share leading practices, or to implement strategies cost-effectively. For students from low-income families, financing is not the only factor standing in the way of higher learning.
Campus officials should do their best to help students work around those challenges. For students with obligations off-campus, these blocks can be easier to manage than a schedule of or minute courses punctuated by hours of free time. The report and its associated outputs provide evidence that peer mentoring works and offers universities a way forward in supporting their students at transition.
At the same time, changes in student demographics are making the challenge of improving student success outcomes even greater. When students fail to graduate, sometimes the ordinary obstacles of daily life are to blame. The final section outlines strategies for dealing with the most common causes of withdrawal and for improving retention rates.
These collaborative efforts have proven extremely successful. Recently, states have shifted their focus to graduation rates as the key priority for determining government funding to institutions. This can result in an additional burden of constructing a support network of mentors, role models, and advisors all on their own. However, improving student success and increasing student retention rates yields a higher financial benefit. Toward the end of last year, the Obama administration released an accreditation standards plan that rated colleges on access, affordability and student outcomes.
